Poppies Cottage Kuta Bali

Poppies Bali offers just twenty luxuriously appointed thatch-roofed cottages that nestle in gardens of hibiscus, scented jasmine, and frangipani. Red brick paths meander past lily ponds, waterfalls, and time-worn stone figures, watched over by the towering palms of an ancient coconut grove.

Over the past three decades many of the true Bali-philes have made their way to Poppies. Today, despite being a veritable institution, Poppies is still being discovered by those new to the delights of Bali as well as those wishing to escape the glitz and glamour of grandiose hotels.

The story goes that during the late ’60s and early ’70s a small restaurant called Poppies already existed in La Jolla, California, and was patronized by certain famous Hollywood personalities of the day. The restaurant was named after the state flower of California, the Golden Poppy, which is actually more orange than gold, and grows wild throughout that state.

In 1972 rumour has it that this restaurant closed down; its former owners were holidaying in Bali at the same time as their friends George and Bob, who had met a young Balinese girl named Zenik Sukenny (”Jenik”), with whom they planned to open a restaurant and bar in Kuta, Bali. Zenik was already operating her own highly successful little streetside restaurant called “Jenik’s Warung”, which served simple meals to the overlanders and travellers of the day, another of which was John, who happened to like laying out gardens.

The quaint Balinese exterior of each cottage, with its private garden and breakfast terrace, belies the spacious and well thought out rooms that lie within. The interiors are decorated with colourful Indonesian fabrics, and include a host of thoughtfully provided creature comforts as well as local artefacts and discreet design details.

Bar & Restaurant

Poppies Restaurant (established in 1973) is just across the lane, and offers high quality dishes, both local and international, at reasonable prices. Guests may also dine at the Pool Bar, or in the privacy of their rooms.

Facilities

In a secluded corner of the garden is the swimming pool and jacuzzi area, set amongst natural rocks and cascades, discreet sun-bathing terraces and riotous banks of bougainvillea. Steps lead up to a peaceful reading room, and to the intimate pool bar, a cool escape for drinks or lunch.

Adjoining every room is a hidden garden area that conceals a charming bathroom featuring a sunken marble bathtub and shower.

Air Conditioning
Each cottage has a quiet split-type air-conditioner with remote control.
There is also a large ceiling fan.

Our Reception Desk staff will help you with reservations and re-confirmations.

Audio System
Each cottage has an individual audio system consisting of DVD and CD players, an MP3 input jack, double cassette player, and FM radio. We have a DVD movie library and a CD library with a wide range of different types of music. (see also DVD)

Baby Sitter
Baby Sitters can be provided.

Beach
Kuta Beach is a 200 metre walk down Poppies Lane.

Beds
Each cottage has either a king size bed or two single beds, to which can be added an extra bed for a third person. Small-sized beds for children, and babycots are also provided.

Check Out
Check Out time is 12:00 noon. Please inform our Reception Desk staff is you wish to check out later than this. Half of the nightly rate will normally be charged for checking out between 12:00 noon and 6:00 p.m.- thereafter, the full rate. Changing rooms are available near the Pool for guests who have to check out a long time before their flight departs.

Doctor
A doctor can be called from the Reception desk.

Drinks
In addition to drinks that are obtainable by calling Room Service, a selection of canned drinks and bottled water is available 24 hours a day from the Front Desk. Clean Ice is provided free of charge.

DVD
Each cottage has its own DVD player and LCD screen. Movies can be borrowed from our movie library.

Electricity
220 volts AC, 50 cycles.Voltage adaptors are available at the Reception Desk. In the event of a power failure our standby generator will be used until power is restored.

Facsmile
Incoming faxes will be brought to your room, and faxes may be sent from the Front Desk.

Fire
Every cottage has a Fire Extinguisher on the verandah.

Games
We have a selection of board games available for Guests’ use.

Hairdryer
A hairdryer is provided in your bathroom.

Ice
Ice is available 24 hours a day.

Internet
Free WiFi covers all rooms and all public areas, including Poppies Restaurant, and our sister restaurant, Kopi Pot. Free use of our desktop computers in Poppies Library is available for those without laptops.

Iron
An iron and an ironing board are available for Guests’ use.

One day service is normally available.

Left Luggage
Guests with late departure times or guests travelling up-country may leave bags in our luggage storeroom.

Library
We have a collection of books which may be borrowed by Poppies Guests; the library is situated close to the Swimming Pool.

Massage
If you would like us to call a masseuse please let us know a day in advance.

Mosquitoes
Openable mosquito screens are installed on all windows, should you wish to turn off the air-conditioning and have the ceiling fan on instead.
A mosquito repelling device is also provided in every cottage.

Pool Bar
Full bar and meal service is available.

Postal Service
Our Reception staff can assist you. And if you would like to send an electronic postcard via the internet, we have a selection to choose from at our Internet Bar or via internet.

Purchase of Souvenirs
If you wish to purchase any of the items provided in your room, please contact the Front Desk.

Refrigerator
In each cottage there is an empty refrigerator which, if required, can be stocked either by the hotel or by the Guest.

Rental of Cars, Vans, Motorcycles and Bicycles
If you wish to go anywhere with a reliable driver please consider Poppies’ own vehicles first – suggested itineraries are listed in the room folder. Maps are available. If you do not require a driver we can arrange vehicle hire for you. Note that some of Poppies staff are devoted bicyle riders and can assist you in preparing your bike tour.

Room Service
Room service is available from 8:00 a.m. till 10:30 p.m. Breakfast may be served to your room from 7:00 a.m. if ordered the previous night.

Security
In-Room Safety Deposit Boxes are provided.

Shaver Point
A twin-voltage shaver socket is provided in the bathroom.
